The Director of Finance is responsible for running the Finance and Accounting functions of the Taproot Foundation. The Director of Finance develops and maintains efficient and effective financial operations, prepares organizational and department budgets and financial analyses, and ensures that appropriate policies, procedures, and internal controls are maintained to safeguard the organization and facilitate effective financial management.
The Director of Finance will be an experienced and can-do professional committed to building and maintaining effective infrastructure for financial management, and will bring to the position strong analytical and organizational skills and the ability to be task-oriented and hands-on.
The Director of Finance is a member of the Management Team and reports to the Executive Director of National Services. The Director of Finance also works closely with the Executive Management Team and the Board’s Finance and Audit Committees. Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Manage all day-to-day financial operations, including A/P, A/R, cash flow, investments, monthly, quarterly, and annual close of accounting, and maintenance of financial records. Develop and maintain effective tools to achieve these ends efficiently and accurately.
- Develop and maintain effective financial/accounting policies, processes, and internal controls.
- Develop and maintain effective cost allocation systems and tools.
- Develop and maintain effective systems for the booking and release of temporarily restricted net assets.
- Develop organizational and department budgets on an annual basis. Monitor and report on progress and changes on a monthly and quarterly basis.
- Secure and manage the annual financial audit.
- Ensure compliance of financial practices with non-profit GAAP.
- Develop and maintain effective contract and billing infrastructure for fee-for-service work.
- Work with Development staff to ensure effective revenue pipeline and cash flow management.
Financial Reporting
- Provide regular financial statements and analyses to the Management Team and the Board of Directors. Provide customized reporting as needed by management.
- Manage cash flow forecasting.
- Ensure all annual, quarterly, and periodic national, state, and local filings are completed – e,g, annual tax filings, quarterly worker’s compensation and unemployment insurance filings, tax exemption filings, non-profit and fundraising registrations, etc.
- Support Management Team with grant compliance, management, and reporting.
Other
- Build and maintain effective relationships with the Board of Directors’ finance committee and audit committee.
- Maintain effective relationship with outside CPA firm on outsourced accounting functions. Manage Finance Assistant and maintain dotted-line relationships to other Finance and Administration Department staff whose responsibilities intersect with Finance.
- Provide key inputs and advice as member of Taproot Foundation’s Management Team.
- Other duties as requested or assigned by the Executive Director of National Services and/or Executive Management Team.
Qualifications
- Six to ten years’ experience in non-profit financial management and accounting.
- Experience in an entrepreneurial, start-up, or high-growth environment, including experience building non-profit Finance and Accounting systems.
- Hands-on, with strong sense of ownership in department function.
- Experience developing budgets for organizations with multiple programs and departments and large number of funding sources.
- Experience with non-profit financial analysis.
- Highly organized and flexible in dynamic environment.
- Experience developing and managing accounting staff and developing service-minded culture.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to Taproot Foundation’s mission and values.
- Impeccable integrity.
- B.A. required. MBA preferred.
- Familiarity with Quickbooks Online and FundEZ helpful.
