GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The California Maritime Academy, a specialized campus of the California State University (CSU) system serves a student population of approximately 850 and a faculty of about 100 full and part-time members. The campus, situated on the shore of the Carquinez Strait close to San Francisco currently offers baccalaureate programs in five disciplines and includes licensing programs for future merchant marines, coast guard and naval reserve officers. There are plans for enrollment growth and curricular expansion including an online international master’s program.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Dean of Extended Learning is responsible for the strategic direction and management of initiatives and the operations of the Office of Extended Learning, which is conducted under the campus’ 501(c)3 designation. The Dean reports to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. As a member of the senior management team in academic affairs, the Dean is responsible for the development and innovative delivery of both credit and non-credit courses and programs and ensures that the Office is self-supporting and profit bearing.
A priority for the Dean will be to: 1) expand the Office’s credit and non-credit course offerings not only to a wider audience of maritime professionals, but also to include traditional continuing education programs for other working professionals and the community; 2) work with campus constituencies and external partners to identify and develop new approaches to program delivery, including the use of on-line offerings and educational technology; and 3) develop on-line international and master’s degree programs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A Master’s degree from an accredited institution in a related area.
At least four years experience as an appropriate administrator in continuing education and demonstrated effectiveness in leading the development and delivery of self-supporting continuing education/external learning programs, preferably in a higher education setting.
Proven record in developing, implementing, and monitoring successful business plans.
Demonstrated experience with technology-mediated teaching and learning.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
A commitment to diversity and experience in working effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse environment.
