The Contemporary Jewish Museum (CJM) seeks an ambitious and inspiring Director of Development who is drawn to the exciting work of building and implementing new and innovative development strategies for a 25-year old institution that has just begun a new phase in its history. In June 2008, the CJM opened a new expanded cultural institution located in the heart of San Francisco's exciting Yerba Buena Center arts district. As a museum devoted to serving broad and diverse audiences, the CJM's goal is to create a dynamic environment in which to explore contemporary perspectives on Jewish culture, history, art, and ideas.
Just having completed a Campaign for the New Museum which raised over $85 million, the CJM seeks a Director of Development who will lead the staff and Board of Trustees to strengthen and expand the CJM's infrastructure for the annual fundraising that is required to sustain the Museum's exciting new programs and facility. A senior and highly visible position at the Museum, the Director of Development will be responsible for all aspects of fundraising and donor relations, including: the annual fund; private major gifts; exhibition underwriting; corporate and foundation support; city, state, and federal grants; planned giving; endowment campaign, and all programs designed to broaden the Museum's funding base. A key aspect of the position is to create a strong partnership with the Board of Trustees, the Development Committee, and the Events Committee. The successful candidate will supervise and motivate a staff of five; and coordinate and provide staff support to Development Committee, Events Committee, and other auxillary groups.
Under the direction of the Museum's Director and CEO, , the Director of Development will strengthen relationships between the Museum and its varied constituencies, work closely with senior staff, trustees, and volunteers on major gift solicitations. S/he will also assist in identifying and cultivating potential Board Trustees, participate in team-oriented senior management programs, and serve as a key advisor and aid to the Director in fulfilling strategic objectives.
Specific Responsibilities and Duties
- Serves in a senior management role to realize the Museum's artistic and operational direction.
- Directs and manages the development department; creates a development plan that is donor-centered and includes revenue projections for the following integrated sectors: annual fund, membership, trustee giving, major giving, corporate support, foundation support, government grants, special events and projects;
- Works in partnership with the Chair of the Board and the Chair of the Development Committee to engage the Board in meeting the fundraising goals of the Museum and expanding the reach of the Museum locally, nationally, and internationally.
Oversees:
- Major gifts program; and continually identifies new prospective major donors and ensures that volunteers and Trustees are motivated and trained to successfully solicit gifts.
- Corporation and foundation program; and identifies new corporate, foundation, and government--prospects--particularly local corporations and national funders.
- Communications with corporate, foundation, and government donors as well as accurate recognition and benefits delivery.
- Production of grant proposals and sponsorships.
- Membership program to enhance membership offerings, deliver on membership benefits, and retain and grow member donors to be more engaged with the Museum.
- The comprehensive planned giving program and prospect research program.
- Manages a portfolio of major individual and institutional donor prospects and solicits major gifts with face-to-face meetings in collaboration with other staff or Trustees.
- Establishes and maintains policies and procedures to ensure data integrity, database management (Raiser's Edge & Patron's Edge), pledge billings, membership renewals and timely acknowledgement of donor gifts.
- Guides the development and administration of the department budget including supervising the preparation of the budget, monthly and quarterly contributed income report, projections, analyses, and reconciliations with the Finance Department, writing support narratives for budgets and monitoring performance against budget and collection of outstanding pledges.
- Works closely with other senior staff including the Director of Marketing and Communications and the Deputy Director of Programs to create dynamic and innovative materials and to work collaboratively to implement a strategy that is reflective of the overall goals of the Museum.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
The successful candidate will have 5+ years of fundraising experience and will have led and contributed to creating sophisticated fund development programs in the past, and be excited by the entrepreneurial spirit necessary at this exciting stage in the Museum's history. S/he will have a personal connection to the Museum's mission, be passionate about art and ideas, and committed to an institution that welcomes, inspires, and educates. The ideal candidate will have the communication skills necessary to effectively advocate for the Museum's long-term benefit. Proven leadership in managing a professional staff in a museum or comparable setting is essential. Also required is demonstrated expertise in developing and nurturing an effective volunteer structure.
Specifically, the successful candidate has excellent leadership, supervisory, planning and organization skills; effective communication, presentation, and problem solving skills; and strong written and oral skills, flexibility and sense of humor. In addition, s/he has team building skills with a collaborative management style; and is a creative, conceptual and analytical thinker, with sensitivity to both the artistic and business worlds. S/he has the ability to forge and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of representatives of public and private organizations, Trustees, volunteers, members, vendors, museum staff and the general public.
The successful candidate must also have natural social aplomb in cultivating donors and prospects, and maintain the highest professional standards of discretion. Independent judgment, decision-making authority and common sense are essential prerequisites of the job. They also must have the highest standards of integrity, must be outgoing, self-starting, well-organized, tactful, detail-oriented, innovative and capable of working under pressure and meeting deadlines.
